Description

Linguère is a city in Senegal, located 305 km to the northeast of Dakar. It is the largest city in a semi-desert area, the Ferlo.

History

The city of Linguère took its name from the name "Linguère" which is the title that shows the first lady in some Wolof kingdoms of Senegal. This word means "Princess." The Linguère was either the sister of the King, or his mother or his first wife when he is polygamous.

For the city of Linguère, the toponyme would come from the Queen-linguere Boury Djilene Ndao, the founder of the city, probably in the 16th century.

The history of the city is linked to that of Djolof.
