Description
Marmara Paros: Marmara is a small agricultural village located on the eastern side of Paros, 15 km from Parikia. The marbles scattered around the village witness the origin of its name (the name of the village means marbles in Greek), as they were used for the construction of mansions and Byzantine churches in the village.
Today, the village has a population of about 500 permanent inhabitants who are mostly involved in agriculture. The architecture of Marmara is typical Cycladic and the dominant colors are of course blue and white. There are old elegant mansions, small shops and stone houses. Within a short distance from the village, there is access to some nice beaches, like Piso Livadi, Tsoukalia and Glyfades.
Archaeologists believe that the ancient town of Yria lies buried close to Marmara. Similar to the other villages of the island, Marmara is an area with religious significance with great celebrations and festivities. The most important is held on September 8th, celebrating Virgin Mary.
