Description

Herve is a Walloon municipality of Belgium in Province of Liège.

Population on 1 January 2016, (17 586 inhabitants), 8562 men and 9024 women, in an area of ​​56.84 km², giving a density of 309.39 inhabitants per km².

Geography

 Located in the geographic region of the Entre-Vesdre and Meuse, the elevation of the city ranges from 205 m (Bolland the valley, the village of Bolland) and 335 m on the heights of Battice. It is the capital of the typical wooded region of Herve. The city is famous for its trade in Herve cheese. Herve was twinned with Battice and Forges-les-Eaux, on June 4, 1960.

History

The name comes from (Herve Arvia) meaning rivers.

The Ban of Herve, also called Quartier Wallon was long part of the Duchy of Limburg, property, with Dalhem County, the Duchy of Brabant and Country called Outremeuse.

During the German atrocities committed at the beginning of the invasion 38 civilians died by firing squad and 300 homes were destroyed by (presumably) the 39th and 165th RI of the Imperial German Army August 8, 1914.

Architecture

  • The church St Jean-Baptiste: built in the 17th century. The tower, with a height of 49 meters (161 ft), dates back to the 13th century. The bell tower is a distinctively crooked spire, in order to offer better resistance to the wind. The church was classed as a historic monument in 1934.

Folklore

The Cavalcade is held every year on Easter Monday since the 1880s in the beginning it was a parade of horses, hence the name 'Cavalcade'.

It became a big procession composed of harmonies, floats and folk groups who wander the streets of Herve during the afternoon of Easter Monday. But in recent years, most of the couplers were replaced by tractors. In 2006, Herve-Attractions decided to make a real feat: brown horses at the Cavalcade. The gamble has paid off: almost 30 teams have replaced all tractors.

Cheese

Herve cheese characteristic bouquet is produced by dairy Herve and in the surrounding farms (farmer Herve). It can be mild or hot. The Remoudou is a variety of the cheese. Other cheeses are produced as Herve Boû of Fagne, the Sottai Hole or the Bouquet Des Moines.
