Description

Jalhay is a municipality of Belgium. It lies in the country's Walloon Region and Province of Liege.

1 January 2016, (8719 inhabitants) 4357 men and 4362 women, and an area of ​​107.89 km2, giving a population density of 80, 81 habitants per km⋅2.

The municipality consists of the following sub-municipalities: Jalhay proper and Sart (or Sart-lez-Spa).

The highest point of the municipality is the Baraque Michel in the High Fens, at 674 meters (2,211 ft).

Folklore

  • Each year on the Sunday following the Mardi Gras takes place the procession of Carnival Jalhay and Herbiester.
  • The Laetare of Sart-Tiège is the occasion of a parade of floats, competitions between Sart-lez-Spa and Tiège.
  • The Festival of Scarecrows Surister in early July. Each villager exposes his scarecrow outside his house.
  • Cabbage Day weekend in mid-January. Since 1981, a good opportunity to taste the stew to local cabbage and partying to accordion tunes.
  • The Ox festival is held the last weekend in July. There is baked ox on the spit.
