Description
Bütgenbach (French: Butgenbach) is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Liège.
Population as of 1 January 2016, 5786 people, 2981 men and 2805 women , an area of 97.31 km2, with a density of 59.46 inhabitants per km2.
On As part of the German-speaking Community of Belgium, the official language in this municipality is German.
The municipality consists of the following sub-municipalities: Bütgenbach proper and Elsenborn. It lends its name to a nearby artificial lake.
History
Bütgenbach is part of the Eastern Townships of Commons, formerly German, which were offered to Belgium by the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 as compensation for losses suffered during the First World War.
During the merger of municipalities in Belgium, in 1977, the old town of Butgenbach merged with that of Elsenborn to take its present form.
Of Note
Butgenbach is known for its reservoir on Warche, but also to the presence on its territory of Elsenborn military camp.
