Rio Pacoti

The Pacoti River is a Brazilian river that bathes the state of Ceará . Rising in the Serra de Baturité , municipality of Guaramiranga , locality of Pernambuquinho, already in limits with the municipality of Pacoti . In the locality of Sítio do Boquerião, municipality of Redenção , receives the waters of the Cana Brava Creek and from this point it is also known as Rio Acarape . Its total course reaches 150 km of extension, bathing several municipalities of the interior of Ceará: Acarape , Guaiúba , Pacajus , Horizonte , Itaitinga and Eusebio) . Its mouth, in the Atlantic Ocean is the border of Fortaleza with Aquiraz , the banks with its mangroves form today the Environmental Protection Area of ​​Rio Pacoti, in the Beach of Porto das Dunas . Its watershed also reaches a small part of the territories of the municipalities of Palmácia and Maranguape .

In its bed are the reservoirs Acarape do Meio and Pacoti / Riachão .

Toponymy 

There is disagreement as to the meaning of the denomination. "Lagoa das Cotias", the Pacovas river (banana) and banana river, according to the indigenous language, are some of the possible meanings. There is still the possibility of being called "Facing the Sea".

Pluviometric conditions

Pacoti, like all Ceará watercourses, is influenced by variations in rainfall, with maximum discharges observed during the rainy season from January to June. due to its proximity to the coast and to the mountain range of Baturité its basin is inserted in a region of warm tropical climate humid, in the majority of the course, and tropical subquent humid, near the source. 

Environmental problems 

It is born as a source of mineral water, which over the years and with the disorderly construction of houses in its spring sources have received a large volume of debris, especially of organic origin originating from domestic sewage. Currently, due to deforestation in its sources, there is the possibility of definitive shortage of the spring.
