Esplanade de la Tourette

Description

The square offers one of the best known panoramas on Marseille, facing the Bonne Mère and the Old Port. It is also one of the entrance gates of the Mucem via the bridge of Fort St Jean.

The esplanade of La Tourette saw its inhabitants perish during the plague of 1720, like many other districts of Marseilles.

A famous figure in Marseille, Nicolas Roze (a knight), cleared the esplanade of the Tourette of its dead, which made it one of his outstanding actions.
